THE STORY: WRITING OFF SCRIPT: WRITERS ON THE INFLUENCE OF CINEMA will be an e-anthology of essays by authors exploring the relationship between movies and their work. Edited by Cynthia Hawkins. Forthcoming from Calavera Books.
THE GOOD CAUSE: Proceeds from WRITING OFF SCRIPT: WRITERS ON THE INFLUENCE OF CINEMA will go to the Joplin Eagles Television 14 Program through the Joplin Schools Tornado Relief Fund. The Joplin Eagles Television 14, or JET 14, Program instructs 160 students each school year in the fundamentals of film production and broadcasting. During the May 22, 2011 F-5 tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri, 54% of Joplin's students lived in the path of the tornado, eight schools including the city’s high school were destroyed or significantly damaged, and one teacher and seven students were killed. The fund has been established by the Joplin School District to provide the affected students and teachers in need with items such as clothes, school supplies, and books and to help in the recovery and rebuilding process ahead. Our donation to the fund, allocated for JET 14, will go toward replacing the JET 14 Program's studio and field cameras and other equipment that had been destroyed on May 22.
THE WRITERS: Thelma Adams, Robin Antalek, Sean Beaudoin, Ernessa T. Carter, Richard Cox, Elizabeth Eslami, Nathan Larson, Vernon Lott, Greg Olear, Neal Pollack, and interviews with David Small and Teddy Wayne.
THE CONTEST: In addition to the authors listed above, WRITING OFF SCRIPT: WRITERS ON THE INFLUENCE OF CINEMA will feature the best three essays on film and the craft of writing submitted by contestants by July 22, 2011. Essays receiving honorable mentions might also be selected for publication in this anthology.
